Patient Encounter Log System (PELS)

The Patient Encounter Project was introduced at Jefferson Medical College in 1994 to provide information needed to assure that students experience a diversity of appropriately supervised patient-care activities during the clinical clerkships. The original scantron card system was replaced in 2000 by a PDA-based program (Patient Encounter Log System, or PELS) that is refined and upgraded each year to better meet curriculum needs and to facilitate student data collection. PELS is now in use in Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Psychiatry, Obstetrics/Gynecology and the Emergency Medicine clerkships.

The advantages of PELS include:
  • Efficient recording of patient and educational data
  • Use of the Palm device for other educational and personal needs
  • Availability of financial aid in support of its purchase (directly related to use for patient encounters)
  • Student tracking of clinical activities on the PELS summary screen
  • Ease in downloading and compiling data for student, faculty and administrative uses

This initiative is a collaboration between Jeff-IT, the clinical departments, the Dean's office and the Center for Research in Medical Education and Health Care.
